Physical fitness involves the development of
all of the body's physical capabilities. Therefore
total fitness involves many components, including
the following:
Aerobic Conditioning: Aerobic activity is a system
of physical conditioning designed to improve the
respiratory and circulatory functions by exercises
that increase oxygen consumption. Oxygen is delivered
to the muscles by the cardiovascular system--the
lungs, heart and circulation of the blood. This
system is developed by continuous, high-repetition
exercise such as running, swimming, jumping rope,
riding a bicycle, etc.
Flexibility: Muscles, tendons and ligaments tend
to shorten over a period of time, which limits
our range of motion and renders us more liable
to injury when sudden stresses are placed on these
structures. But we can counteract this tendency
by stretching exercises and physical programs such
as yoga or Pilates.
Muscular Conditioning: There is only one way to
develop and strengthen the muscles: resistance
training. When you contract the muscles against
resistance, they adapt to this level of effort.
To keep getting stronger, you have to keep increasing
the resistance so that the muscles must continue
to adapt. The best and most efficient way of doing
this is through weight training.
Nutrition and Diet: Eating right is essential to
any training program. It makes no sense to make
demands on the body if you haven't given it the
nutrients it needs to function properly. Therefore
an important part of this program involves learning
how and what to eat to maximize health and energy.
Pilates Method: The Pilates
Method is a one-on-one instruction on the spring
resistant equipment invented by Joseph Pilates.
This overall body conditioning and injury prevention
program, as well as rehabilitative therapy, emphasizes
centering the body and developing strength of the
abdominal and torso muscles. Each exercise is designed
to strengthen and stretch the muscles involved,
opening the joints and releasing tension. The end
result is a well-toned, strong body with improved
postural alignment and flexibility able to move
more efficiently with better coordination, balance,
and grace. Specific breathing patterns assist in
directing energy while relaxing the body. A session
is 55 minutes.
Please see the Trainer's
Corner for more information regarding the
history of the Pilates Method.
